Looking towards the West End
This photo was taken from The Scott Monument in
August 2009. It looks along Princes street towards the West End as
new tram lines are being laid.
Royal Scottish Academy
In the foreground on the left are:
- Royal Scottish Academy, one of the
National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh. A large stone figure of
Queen Victoria is seated on the roof of the RSA, facing to the north,
looking up Hanover Street.
- An open square to this side (east)
of the RSA. This shows that the photo was taken during the Edinburgh
Festival Fringe. There are tented stalls, performers and spectators
here.
Princes Street Gardens
Beyond the Royal Scottish Academy are West
Princes Street Gardens, and Castle Rock on the extreme left of this photo.
Lothian Road
Lothian Road runs across the top of the photo.
The buildings on Lothian road seen here are:
- Standard Life Assurance Company's Head
Office. This is the light stone building with two domes. It is on
the corner of Lothian Road and the Western Approach Road.
- Caledonian Hotel. This is the long
red stone building extending down Lothian Road to the West End of Princes
Street. St Cuthbert's Church can be seen in West Princes Street
Gardens, in front of the Caledonian Hotel. |
