Looking to the NE

This photo was taken on St Andrew's Day, November 30, 2010.  A storm seems to be brewing in the background.

Streets

The streets are:

-  to the north (top-left corner of the photo):  South St David Street.

-  to the east (top-right corner of the photo):  Princes Street.

-  to the south (lower-right corner of the photo):  Waverley Bridge

Monuments and Buildings

The high column (centre-left in the photo) is to Melville.  It is in the centre of St Andrew Square, part of Edinburgh's First New Town.

The large concrete building just below the skyline (centre-right in the photo) is the St James complex, a hotel, shopping centre and former government buildings, all soon to be demolished.

The helter skelter (lower-right corner in the photo) is in East Princes Street Gardens, close to the Scott Monument, for Edinburgh's Christmas and New Year Festivities.

On the skyline, are:

-  left:  the hills of Fife, to the north of the Firth of Forth.

-  centre:  Newhaven and Leith, on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth.

-  right:  monuments on Calton Hill, close to the East End of Princes Street.
