open-top bus on a fine summer evening in July 2009.
The Scottish National
Portrait Gallery at 1 Queen Street, Edinburgh opened in 1889 as
the first purpose-built National Portrait Gallery in the world.
The gallery was
designed by R Rowand Anderson, and was donated to the nation by J
R Findlay, the owner of the Scotsman newspaper.
The photograph above
shows part of the frontage of the building, immediately above the
main entrance in Queen Street.
The gallery is
currently closed for refurbishment work, due to be completed in
2011. |
