High Rise Flats and Maisonettes

Thank you to Robert Laird, Longstone, Edinburgh for allowing me to reproduce these photos that he took at Sighthill in 2011, the year that the Sighthill high rise flats were demolished.

High Rise Flats and Maisonettes

"These high rise flats are near the top of Broomhouse Road where it meets with Calder Road.  High rise housing was built in the early-1960s of which, the three tower blocks

Weir Court

Hermiston Court

Glen Almond Court

were the most obvious on the skyline over on the north-west of the city.

The other block sitting adjacent to those three, but not quite so high as them was Broomview House. These buildings together were home to about 350 families.

Photo 1 is a view from Broomhouse Road, looking up to Calder Road at a time when the flats were still occupies.

Photo 2 was taken from almost the same spot, with the demolition complete and the maisonettes visible.

Photo 3 was taken from  Sighthill/Calder Road prior to the high rise flats coming down.

Photo 4 was taken from Broomhouse Place North prior to the demolition of the flats."

Demolition

"In 2011, these four blocks were demolished. The site has been cleared and the next phase of the project is to pull down the remaining maisonettes, later this year.  The idea then is to build 'affordable' housing on the land.

There can’t be too many high rise blocks left in Edinburgh, if any.***"

Robert Laird, Longstone, Edinburgh:  January 30 + February 5 2012

*** Yes, most of the high rise flats have been demolished in recent years.  However, there are still a few standing .  Those that come to mind are at Leith, Muirhouse and Greendykes.  There may well also be a few others.
