Two Photos

I worked in several Edinburgh offices of The Standard Life Assurance Company and its subsidiary, Standard Life Investments, from 1963 to 2003.

I don't know when the two photos above were taken, but the they bring back memories of how the entrance to the company's Head Office in George Street used to look when I first knew it.

Entrance Hall

This photo was taken long before security passes were needed to get into the building.  This was the Entrance Hall, with just one Commissionaire on duty - when he was not at lunch.

-  The entrance to the left led into Georg Street.

-  The entrance in the centre led to the main staircase and the offices

-  The entrance to the right led to a small cloakroom.

-  There was also a Reception (See Photo 2).  It's entrance was directly behind where the camera was placed for the photo above.)

Reception

The Standard Life Assurance Company's business was conducted mostly by correspondence,  and less frequently by telephone.  The Head Office had only 9 external telephone lines in 1963.

Occasionally, a Policyholder would visit.  This is the Reception that they were taken to, for a cup of coffee and to discuss their  business.

The Reception looked very much the same when I retired from the company in 2003.
