Answer
Thank you to Richard Torrance who wrote:
"The
1897 Edinburgh directory has Charles Spinks,
wood turner, at 19 & 21
Pirrie Street (off Gt.
Junction Street). At No.
20 was J & D
Sutherland, joiners.
Charles Spinks'
home address was 52 Great Junction Street

So, it appears that the photograph above would have
been taken at Pirrie Street, Leith some time between 1895 and 1905.
See the table below.
It may be possible to narrow down this period a
little more by consulting Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directories for
1901 to 1904. |

After
reading Richard Torrance's comments above, I consulted a few more
Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directories to find out a little more about the history of these two
companies. Here are some extracts from the directories: |

Another Photo |
Kim Traynor
also sent me another photograph of Charles Spinks workers.

I think this photo may be older than the one
at the top of this page, because in this one, Charles Spinks appear to
have no neighbours on their right. They have neighbours in the photo
at the top of the page.
In both
photos, one of the men is holding a two-handled saw. Is it the
same man in each photo, and if so, how much younger does he look in this
photo than in the photo at the top of the page? |
