Thomas Forsyth
"Thomas 'Tommy' Weston Milne Forsyth,
my grandfather, is far right in this photo, wearing the white striped cycling
gear.

Unfortunately, I can’t date this photo
precisely, but I reckon it’s around 1905, when Thomas would have been aged about
20.
I have been undertaking some serious
genealogical research into the life of Thomas Forsyth. He was born in
Broxburn, West Lothian, in 1885 and
attended George Watson's College in Edinburgh.
He cycled for
the Vulcan Cycling Club of Edinburgh, winning several trophies and prizes, some
of which survive, as do photos.
Tommy also apparently worked as an
apprentice for John Croall the coachbuilders on Castle Terrace before leaving
Scotland around 1910

He then went to Egypt where he
eventually made his fortune as a representative for several leading British
motor and engineering companies in North Africa and the Middle East."
William Forsyth
"The elder brother of Thomas Forsyth
was William, known as ‘Cap’. In this photo, he is sitting in the middle with cycling medals on his waistcoat:

William, broke the motorcycle speed
record between John O’Groats and Edinburgh in 1910!"
Peter Thomson
"If you look at this photo of Peter
Thomson, taken in 1906

and compare it with the chap to far
right in this photo

I reckon that could be him as a younger
man. What do you think?’
Vulcan Cycling Club
"I wonder if more records or an archive
of the Vulcan Cycling Club exists elsewhere. I will have to do some more
digging!"
