Background to taking the Photos
This is one of a series of photos that I took
in London in the early-1990s. At the time, I was working in
Edinburgh and visiting London about once a month to attend meetings.
I used to travel to London on the overnight
sleeper train. This gave me a couple of hours to spare, to wander
around London with my camera before the day's business began.
On many occasions, I visited
London's Docklands to see the latest constructions there.
However, I took this photo
in February 1991 during an early morning snowstorm in the City. It
was taken in the City from Princes Street, looking towards King William
Street, The Monument and London Bridge.**

I was contacted by Tracey Woods of City of London

made the request below, which I agreed to.

"Your photo of the two City of London Police
Officers in the snow has been forwarded to me. It is one of the
images for our Christmas Card which we would like to consider for this
year and wondered if you would be agreeable to this.
Do you know the identity of the two Police
Officers?"
Police Officers
Tracey sent the message above to
me 22 years after I took the photo. At the time, I did not
know the identity of the two Police Officers, but see
Comments 3 below.

Just one
day after being asked above if I knew the identity of the two Police
Officers in the photo that I had taken 22 years earlier, I received the
message below from Ian Moore.

"I was recently idly searching images on
Google for City of London Police with whom I served up to 1995. I
noticed that on the very first Google image page you have 3 photos of me
and a colleague taken around the Bank area during a snowfall (dated Feb
7th 1991).

The first 3 images below are all from the same
photo - reproduced in

The 4th image is taken from a similar photo,

What are the chances of that?
I am the one with my back to the camera.

This is the Christmas Card that City of London
Police produced. All proceeds from the sale of the card were donated
to Child Victims of Crime.

"Your photo of the London Policemen in the
snow has just been brought to my attention. The black & white image
recently appeared on a Google search.
It has been quite a talking point on the City
of London Police Facebook page, and I'm curious as to how you came to take
it.
I've given the background to
taking this photo in my 'Comments 1' above.

"I
was aware of the Christmas card, via colleagues, but I had never seen it
as I transferred to another force in 1994. The photo may also have
been used for the front cover of a City of London Police magazine, but I
don’t know how reliable this information is, or the date of that
magazine."
