Hanover Street

Location

This view looks to the north, up Hanover Street, towards the statue of George IV at the Hanover Street / George Street junction.

This photograph was taken from the steps of the Royal Scottish Academy in Princes Street.

Road Works

This view shows some of the road works taking place in the centre of Edinburgh, re-laying pipes and cables before installing the track for Edinburgh's new trams, due to begin operation along Princes Street in 2011 - or more likely, 2012.

UPDATE September 2011:  Latest estimated date for running to start, 2014.

Here is how Hanover Street looked a couple of years earlier, before the road works:

More Road Works

From the point where this photo was taken, there are currently road works and roads closed to traffic:

-  to the north:  Hanover Street

-  to the south:  The Mound

-  to the west:  Princes Street

-  to the east:  Princes Street.

The pavement along the south side of Princes Street beside Princes Street Gardens has been closed to pedestrians between the West End and the Scott Monument, but the pavement along the north side of the street is still open.

Princes Street is due to re-open to traffic and pedestrians in late-November, in time for Edinburgh's Winter Festival, 2009.
