Flock of Pigeons

1996

This flock of bronze pigeons was installed on the pavement at Elm Row, at the junction of Leith Walk and London Road in August 1996

The birds, each weighing 20lb were made at Powderhall Bronze foundry.  The sculptor was Shona Kinloch.

The flock consists of 8 pigeons but unfortunately, despite being fixed to the pavement, there have been occasions when one or more has been removed and new pigeons have had to be cast to replace them.

2006

There have been several instances of the bronze pigeons being stolen or damaged in recent years.

However, people working nearby and passers-by were surprised, on December 19, 2006, to find better news.  A 'good Samaritan' had visited the pigeons overnight and dressed them in winter coats made from white blankets.

A photograph of the pigeons in their winter coats appeared in the  Edinburgh Evening News on December 19, 2006.  A few hours later, the winter coats had mysteriously vanished.
