Pleasance

1975 and 2011

Thank you to Alex Jackson for sending the two photos above that he took of Pleasance, 36 years apart.  Both photos look down Pleasance to the cross roads at the foot of the hill:

-  St Mary's Street, straight ahead leading to Netherbow, Royal Mile

-  Cowgate, to the left leading to Grassmarket

-  Holyrood to the right leading to Holyrood Palace

Between 1975 and 2011:

- The tenements and shops lining Pleasance have been demolished, giving a more open outlook with grass slopes and revealing a stretch of the Flodden Wall, part of Edinburgh City Walls, on the left.

-  Travelodge Hotel has been built in St Mary's Street

-  There have been new developments at Holyrood, including The Scottish Parliament.  Note the brown tourist sign to Dynamic Earth in the second photo.

"The photos above are of the same location as this 'Where is it?' photo taken at the foot of St Mary's Street some time between 1911 and 1916.

"The building being constructed in this 1975 photo was originally a new Head Office for Ben Line.  They moved there from Bernard Street, Leith, but now have their offices in the Bonnington Bond building at Leith.   They have a lovely collection of model ships.

The building under construction in 1975, or at least some floors in it, were later taken over by Heriot Watt University when they were constructing their new campus at Riccarton.

Only later did it become Travelodge"
