The Happy Carrot
"We sold Herbs, spices and fruit and
veg. The origin of the name was from the previous owner,
John Anderson (?) . He
named it after a health food shop in the film 'The Sleeper'
starring Woody Allen. Woody played a jazz musician and owner
of the Happy Carrot Health-Foodstore, living in Manhattan in 1973.
Music
The shop had originally been a house
and was split off from the main house which was at the back of the
tenement. The classical violinist Leonard Friedman, lived in this
flat. At night, when the shop was closed, I could hear
Leonard practicing with a piano accompanying him.
Concert
A highlight, around the early 1990s,
was a concert given by Leonard and Aly Bain, who lived in
Stockbridge too. The concert was in the halls in Hamilton
Place. Leonard had to learn a Shetland air and Aly had to
learn a classical piece. It was a great night. I have
great memories of a great community.
