1911 and 1916.

Photos 1 and 2
Comparing the two
photos, we see:
- The shop belonging to Joseph Weinberg, Furniture and
Tool dealer at 85 St Mary Street and the low buildings beside it
have been demolished and replaced by a new hotel:
Travelodge, Edinbrugh Central.
- A Holiday Inn has been built a little further up
Cowgate, at the junction of Cowgate and South Gray's Close,
centre-left in the 2009 photo.
- The old lamp post on the extreme right has been replaced by
a sandwich board advertising pizza, falafel, panini and coffee.
- The shop in the bottom left corner of the old photo
has been taken away BUT the high wall behind it, part of a
Salvation Army building has survived. The same piece of
stonework can be seen jutting out into the sky on both photos. |
Photo 3
Thank you to Forbes
Wilson, now living in Guildford, Surrey, England for sending me
Photo 3 above, after seeing Photos 1 and 2.
Forbes' photograph
was taken in December 1951. I feel that it really captures
the atmosphere of a damp and misty day in Edinburgh.
