Public Toilets

Thank you to Terry Cox who wrote

Leith

"I have a recollection of there being public toilets in the middle of the road at that end of Albert Street, Leith, but I'm beginning to think it was a figment of my imagination. They were underground, and there might have been a Police Box as well. There's no trace of them now.  Can anyone confirm or deny their existence?"

Tollcross

"There's also no trace of the public toilets at Tollcross, and they were definitely there."

Public Toilets

Leith

"I have no reason to doubt the existence of the toilets at the end of Albert Street, if that's what Terry remembers."

Waverley

"I certainly remember there being underground public toilets at the east end of Princes Street.  They were there when I moved to Edinburgh in 1963, and probably for a few years afterwards.

These toilets were large toilets.  They looked Victorian to me.  Daylight shone into them from above through small glass skylights set into the paving stones in front of Register House."

Public Clocks

Waverley

"Incidentally, as an aside, has anybody noticed that there are two towers on the frontage of Register House.  One has dials that shows the wind direction.  The other has clock faces, but one of the faces has numbers I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII, XII.

The numbers are now very faint on the dial, but I have photos taken of it when they were clear.  If the dial is restored, at some stage, I'll be interested to see what numbers are painted on it.  I wrote,  few years ago, to Register House to see if they could tell me the reason for the two 'XII's, but they said they did not know the reason."

Pilrig

"The only other clock that I can recall seeing with an incorrect dial was also in Edinburgh.  It was high on the steeple of the church in Leith Walk at Pilrig.  One of the dials on it has the numbers:  I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, XI, X, XII, XII.

I suspect that the two 'XI's in this case are probably the result of a mistake that happened when the clock was repainted during restoration, probably about 20 years ago."

Public Toilets

Albert Street, Leith

"I write to confirm, that there was indeed, at the Leith Walk end of Albert Street, an 'Underground Gents Toilet'.   There was also adjacent, a 'Public Telephone Box' and a 'Police Box' that was still there in the 1950s."

Elm Row, Leith Walk, Edinburgh

"As a matter of interest, there was also, in Elm Row, a 'Cloche merle-type' of Gents Toilet  (cast iron and open to the skies).  It was on on the Pavement, alongside Gayfield Sq Gardens. Nearby, was a large “Horse Trough”.  They were both still there in the late 1940s."

Public Toilets

Thank you to Stuart Lyon for replying to Terry Cox's question above.

Stuart sent me a large scale map , published by the Ordnance Survey in 1944, showing the toilets to be in the location described by Terry in his question above.
