200 mph Trains
Following their announcement, earlier this month,
of a possible £1bn spend on the Edinburgh-Glasgow line, reducing the
journey time between the two cities to 35 minutes, Network Rail have now
announced a possible spend of £34m on a new North-South line
linking London to Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The line would run via Birmingham, Manchester and
Preston. The journey time from London to Edinburgh would be brought
down to 2hrs 9 min, just over half the present journey time.
The plans would include building a new station in
the centre of Edinburgh, close to Waverley Station.
Such a line would take about 5 years to plan and
a further 5 years to build. Detailed route proposals are due to be
submitted to the UK Government by the end of 2009.
