More Vehicles

"There are two types of vehicle that I recall from childhood days that so far don't appear anywhere on the site.  I'm hoping some of your correspondents may be able to come up with some photos."

Milk Floats

"There used to be a chain of dairy shops across the city, owned by Edinburgh & Dumfriesshire Dairies, know to us as the 'Dummy D'.

They had a fleet of electric milk floats for deliveries."

Bakers' Vans

"Another firm long since disappeared is Scott-Lyon Ltd, the bakers.  Memory tells me that they had a depot in Trafalgar Street, Leith but I might be wrong on that.  It was 40-something years ago!

Anyway they had a fleet of green vans that used to be parked, end-on to the pavement, outside that depot."

If you do know of any photos of milk floats or bakers' vans that I might be able to add to the web site, please email me.

Thank you.    -  Peter Stubbs:  April 6, 2008

UPDATE

Hi Donald:

Here is a photo that includes a milk float in Princes Street.

The photo was taken in 1961.

Scott Lyons

"Donald Grant was correct about the Scott Lyons depot being in in Trafalgar Street, Leith, and how they parked their vans.

I worked as  a van boy for them in 1953/54.  We delivered to the Scott Lyon shops, all over the city.  I think I put on about a stone in weight during my time there, eating the fancy cakes and pies.

It was a big firm, but you don't see any of their shops any more.  Perhaps they changed their name.

Scott Lyons

I also had a short stint with the Edinburgh & Dumfriesshire Dairies, after leaving Scott Lyons. There were some electric milk floats at that time, but the main mode of transport was the old Horse & Cart, which is what I worked off.

Sorry I don't have any photos, as cameras were a bit of a luxury in those days.

However they were happy times and I enjoyed them.  Thanks for  reminding me."

Evening News Vans

"Have you or anyone else got a decent photograph of the shiny silver vans used by the Edinburgh Evening News?

I think they had, in embossed gold/brass  letters, 'NEWS' on each side.  They were certainly  distinctive."
