Thank you to Ian Malcolm, who  studied at Leith Nautical College in 1947-48, for telling me about some of his experiences in and around Edinburgh, including Musselburgh Races, below.

A Day at the Races

"I went to Musselburgh Races with Bob Gordon and Andy Abbott.  A day at the Musselburgh races was great fun and the tram ride from the GPO in Waterloo Place cost only 3d (1¼p).

We stood with the spectators at the five-foot high dyke on Linkfield Road until the horses thundered past, and then ran across the course to the free enclosure.

It was separated from the paying enclosure by a high iron fence, but bets were passed through to bookies' runners on the other side.

In the midst of all this, people walked about with billboards slung round their necks displaying such messages as:

-  'Prepare to meet Thy God' and
-  'The end of the World is Nigh'.
