Thank you to George Gowans who wrote: |
Steel Coulson's Brewery
"My Uncle,
Kenneth Macintosh, was caretaker at
Steel Coulson's brewery when I was a child.
He and my Aunt Annie,
my Mother's sister, had a flat
above the Offices. I used to enjoy visiting them.
My
uncle had a small plot in the brewery hark* where he kept tortoises."

I
asked George Gowans a couple of questions about his 'Recollections
1' above.
Here are the replies that he gave to me: |
Question
1
Where was Steel Coulson's Brewery?
REPLY 1:
"Steel Coulson's
Brewery was the first one on the left hand side of
the road leading to Croft-an-Righ,
as you go down the road towards Holyrood
Park."

Question
2
What was a hark?
REPLY 2:
"As for the word
'hark', this
I'm afraid was a word subconsciously dredged from childhood
memories. It was used by my family
and as I have not come upon it in this context anywhere else I
think it must have been a made-up family
word which simply meant a yard or open space I don't know why I
typed that. Perhaps you could change it
for me.***"

In fact, I'll leave the word 'hark' in George's
'Recollections 1' above.
I'll also add this word to
the 'Edinburgh
Words' page and will ask if anybody else has perhaps come
across this use of the word. |
