"My aunt, Christina Dutton, recognised this photograph of the Police Box at Tollcross on the EdinPhoto web site:

She used to work for Waddel's, the pork butchers in Tollcross, and  had to start very early.  The policeman in the box used to watch out for her and tap on the shop window to see if she was ok.

Does anyone recall Waddel's.  The boss was Jessie Richardson."

Waddel's the Butcher

"My grandfather, my father and I all have the same name - John Hill Waddell.

My grandfather was born in 1886.  His 1909 marriage certificate shows him as a master Butcher.  The 1911 census has him as a Butcher and an employer so must have had his own business.

He lived at 52 Broughton Street which is some way from Tollcross.  I wonder if  Lorraine's aunt can provide any clues to ownership of the shop when she was there.  I have no knowledge of a Jessie Richardson.

"I've looked again at Recollections 2 (above).  I now believe that the pork butcher was one of the branches of R D Waddell, a Glasgow firm with branches around Scotland. There is some detail on the web about this firm. For example see this page from the Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directory, 1909-10
