Braelangwell House

Photographs 4, 5 and 6  above come from a collection of almost 100 Ross family photos acquired by Stephen Beadle.  These 3 photos (and others) are from part of the collection entitled 'Braelangwell House, Ross-shire'.  The house with its lawns and walled gardens is in Ross-shire, 17 miles north of Inverness.

This photo may have been taken by Mrs Horatio Ross, wife of one of the grandsons of the early sportsman, photographer and politician, Horatio Ross (1801-1886).

Stephen Beadle adds:

"As this photo is marked 'Braelangwell House, Ross-shire', it was probably taken somewhere around there while the people were in residence at the house."

Question

Who is Sandy in this Photograph?

Answer 1

Possibly Sandy Munro

Thank you to Louise Munro Gamble (née Ross) of Perth, Scotland who left the following message in the EdinPhoto Guest Book:

"Your photo of Sandy in his kilt with his dogs and a small boy interests me if associated with Gledfield House.

My Great Grandfather Alexander (Sandy) Munro was the Head Gamekeeper there, some time in the nineteenth century.

Could this be a photo of him in his highland best with one of his sons?"

Louise Munro Gamble (née Ross) of Perth, Scotland:  April 30, 2007

Answer 2

Very likely to be Sandy Munro (Sandy Luchag)

Louise Munro Gamble (née Ross) wrote again with the following message:

"Further to my comments on the 4, 5 & 6 above, I have spoken to Sandy's granddaughter who believes that they are indeed of Sandy, and possibly the small boy is her father.

To confirm this, Sandy had a large birthmark on his right cheek in the shape of a mouse which, on close inspection of one photo, it appears to be present. He grew his beard to hide it.  Sandy was known as 'Sandy-Luchag' = Sandy-Mouse."

Would it be possible for you to obtain higher resolution copies for me of these three photos for inspection?

I hope we can confirm it is indeed Sandy as we only have a photo of him as an older man."

Louise Munro Gamble (née Ross) of Perth, Scotland:  May 17, 2007

UPDATE

Sandy also appears in photos 4 and 5.  I've now added larger images of  these two photos to the web site:
