James Auld
Princes Street Studio
|
In 1904, James Auld gave a
demonstration of carbon printing to Edinburgh Photographic Society.
At that time, he had a studio at 101
Princes Street
"with a north light and electric
installation”
The studio had facilities
for carbon, platinotype, monochrome, water colour and oils.
His work included wedding, children, ‘at home’, group photography,
and miniatures.”

Below is a cabinet print from James
Auld's studio at 101 Princes Street.
Many cabinet prints had fuller
details of the photographer and his studio on the back, but the back of
this one is blank.

Aberdeenshire Addresses

Was the Edinburgh photographer, James Auld (above) the same man
as the Aberdeenshire photographer, James Auld (son of photographer
Charles Auld, b. Ellon Aberdeenshire around 1829)?

UPDATE
1
I think that the
Aberdeenshire photographer, James Auld is unlikely to be the same
man as the Edinburgh photographer by that name.
I've been shown a
cabinet print by the Aberdeen photographer who had studios in Huntly
and Ellon. The style of it differs from those I have seen from
James Auld Edinburgh.
The Cabinet Print
by James Auld (Aberdeenshire) has an elaborate 'JA' monogram in the
panel below the photo that includes his studio addresses. The
Cabinet Prints by James Auld (Edinburgh) have no monogram.

UPDATE 2
Despite my
comments in UPDATE 1 above, it appears that the Edinburgh
Photographer is likely to be the same man as the Aberdeenshire
photographer of that name.
Thank you to
Dairmid Mogg who wrote:
"I see that there is some doubt about whether the James Auld of
Ellon is the same as the James Auld of Edinburgh. I can confirm that
he probably is. I found the following story in the Buchan and East
Aberdeenshire Advertiser, 12 March 1901."

Ellon--Success of an Artist
The friends of Mr James Auld, photographer, Ellon,
Huntly, and George Street, Edinburgh, will be pleased to
learn that he has secured in Princes Street, Edinburgh,
one of the best photographic saloons in Scotland. If
energy and talent command success, Mr Auld richly
deserves it.
That he is a rising photographer cannot be doubted, and
the various silver and gold medals which he has gained
in world-wide competition, has (sic) encouraged him to
enter upon this new and extensive business.

Question
In 1901, a Royal Photographic Society Medal
was won by James Auld.
Was this the same man as the photographer,
James Auld (Edinburgh) and / or James Auld (Aberdeenshire) above?
[David Likar, Melbourne, Australia, has
a copy of this Medal.] |
