James Farmer

James Farmer was assistant to Ivan Szabo until 1858.

3rd PSS Exhibition, Dec 1858

Farmer exhibited 4 portraits in the 3rd PSS Exhibition which opened in December 1858.  He wrote:

“Trusting you may not think the pictures unworthy of a pupil of Sjabo’s."

One of these portraits was of Ivan Szabo.  The press wrote:

"He exhibited a portrait of Ivan Szabo, so well executed we took it at first to be a production of that master, himself."    [Evening News:  24 February 1859]

Farmer worked as a professional photographer from 1859 to 1861.
