William J Hay lived and worked for many years at John Knox House, a short distance down the Royal Mile from where this photograph was taken.

Almost all are of scenes in the Royal Mile, leading from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace, including the one above, which is one of the few photographs in his series that includes any form of transport.  This photo looks as if it may have been taken in the early 1900s.
