Octavius Hill worked in partnership with with Robert
Adamson. Their studio was at Rock
House at the base of Calton Hill, close to the position of the
house gable end in the centre of this sketch.
This
view from the top of Calton Hill looks to the west along Princes
Street. The houses on the north (right hand) side of Princes
Street in this view were to house many of Edinburgh's early
photographic studios
in the mid 19th century.
The
Dugald Stewart Monument is prominent in the foreground centre-right.
