Q1
|
C William Laubach was a photographer in Manchester
in 1881.
Was he a member of the same family?
|
Answer 1. to
Q1
|
1. 'Yes'. Thanks to Pat Laubach who
reports (below) that C William Laubach (Manchester) was in fact the same
person as the Edinburgh photographer Wilhelm Christian Laubach. The
Laubach family moved from Edinburgh to Chorlton, Lancashire around 1877.
William appeared in the Manchester trade directories
as a photographer.
2. Thank you, also, to Sharon and David
Donaldson who report (below) that in the late 1880s Wilhelm Christian
Laubach and his family moved from Manchester to Newcastle upon Tyne.
I have found no evidence*** of William continuing his
photographic business in Newcastle. The PhotoHistorian Supplement
'Professional Photographers in Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland
1873-1920' does not list him.
*** Evidence now found. Please see
Answer 2 to Q1. below
|
|
1. It appears that W Laubach did, in fact, continue his photographic
business when he moved to Newcastle. Thank you to Gordon Brown who
wrote to tell me that:
- he has an old photo with a faded stamp on the back reading:
W. Laubach
Photographer
10 NEWBRIDGE STREET
NEWCASTLE ON TYNE
copies may always be had.
|
- he has another photo from the same address, but with a
different name on the back, i.e. Edward G Brewis.

2. I don't have much knowledge of Newcastle Photographers, as most of
my research has been restricted to the history of photography in
Edinburgh.
However, I do have a booklet published by the Royal Photographic
Society Historical Group, titled:
The PhotoHistorian Supplement
'Professional Photographers in Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland
1873-1920' .
This booklet makes no reference to any Laubach photographic business
being based at 10 New Bridge Street, Newcastle, but it does refer to other
photographers who were based at this addres, i.e.
10 NEW BRIDGE STREET, NEWCASTLE |
1889-1920 (or later) |
EG Brewis ++ |
1879-80 |
E Totherick |
1883-86 |

Brewis also had a studio at Heaton
Park Road, Newcastle (1895-1902). |

Wendy Dighton wrote on June 19, 2007:
"I am looking for a Great-Grandfather,
Richard Louis Laubach from Edinburgh, born 1869. Is this the same family?"
Wendy added on June 20, 2007:
"I meant
to tell you, before, that Richard L. Laubach's Father kept a Music shop in
Princes Street around 1869 when Richard was born."
|
Answer 1 to
Q2
|
Considering the second message that you sent me
(above) it seems to me very likely that Richard L Laubach would have been
from the same family as the other Laubachs listed above.
If anybody knows what relation Richard L Lauback
might have been to the other Laubachs, please e-mail me and I'll pass on
your message to Wendy.
Thank you. -

Answer 2 to
Q2
|
Thank you to Jim Dawe who replied to the comments
above.
Jim wrote:
"The Laubachs are rare, and rarer
still in Edinburgh.
Richard L Lauback is indeed of
the same family. Richard is Eugene Richard Ludwig 'Lewis' Laubach,
b.8/9/1868 m.16/1/1893 to E. Annie Forder. That is all I have on him and
his descendants.
I would love to get the
descendant line of his family and their photography or musical talents.
(As they are Laubachs, it is highly likely they are either involved
professionally or on an amateur level in the arts.)
Richard is the second eldest son
of Wilhelm Christian Laubach."

Larry Sargent wrote:
"I have a clarinet 'C' from my great
granduncle who played in the City Artillery (I think) and fought with the
Canadian forces in WW1. He was Sgt EWE Russell.
The name on the clarinet is Laubach and
Sons, Edinburgh. Do you have any information on the music business?"
Larry Sargent, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada: May 28, 2009
|
Answer to
Q3
|
Jim Dawe wrote from Canada, referring to a
Franklin Ludwig Laubach page on the Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan
web site.
Jim wrote:
"The provenance of the clarinet
may have been equipment supplied by Ludwig Franklin Laubach (1857-1923).
He was Bandmaster for the Canadian Expeditionary Force during WWI.
He joined the 68th Battalion, CEF
in 1915 and his band played on the Atlantic troop ships but made a brief
tour of Edinburgh and London.
I am guessing the clarinet was
supplied by Mr. Laubach as the family music store in Edinburgh may have
been non-existent during the first World War, but if it did exist then,
the clarinet and other musical instruments could have been purchased on
that tour, perhaps.
Other than that, there were other
Canadian Laubachs as well as their English and Scottish cousins involved
in the war who could have been the source - anyone's guess I suppose.
Pat: was the music store
still in existence 1915?"
Jim Dawe, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada: June 1, 2009 |
Pat Laubach replied:
"The Edinburgh music store would
not have been in existence at the beginning of the war as Philipp died in
1892, and by then all his children were musicians in London (mainly the
Carl Rosa Opera Co.)
However, the clarinet almost
certainly originated at Philipp's store at Greens Place. I assume it
arrived in Canada with an immigrant, so perhaps a little work on the
family tree might help find an answer."

Question
Census Records
"The 1911 census records Richard Laubach age
43 born in Edinburgh, Scotland. It records his wife as Annie age 41.
They reside at 13 York Road, Kings Cross, London, England.
It also records his first two children being
born in Newcastle Upon Tyne. This suggests this may well be the Richard
Louis Laubach recorded on the web site.
The 1911 census records a further 5 children
born in London England. Are you able to confirm if this is the same
Richard Laubach and do you have any further information on the family
whilst in London during 1911?

Reply to John?
It's some time since I last looked at the Laubach family, and I
currently don't have the time to research the families of individual
photographers, so unfortunately, I'm not able to investigate the question
above, myself.
However, if you have any info that you think may be of interest to
John,
please email me, then I'll pass on your message to him. Thank
you.
