John Chalmers Leslie

John Chalmers Leslie had a photographic studio at 23 Alderbank Terrace from
1907 to 1910.
Below is the only photograph that I have seen from his studio. It is a
cabinet print with a plain grey back. The address given on the print is:
J Chalmers Leslie
Merchiston, Edinburgh

1894?
"I have a John Chalmers Leslie cabinet print of an
ancestor that I believe was made circa 1894 which would pre-date his 1907-1910
Edinburgh studio.
Is it possible he was doing business earlier
elsewhere or have I simply got my dates wrong?"

Hi Bill:
Yes, the date of 1894 that you mention seems very plausible. JC Leslie
would very likely have been based at his studio at Merchiston, Edinburgh then.
I've not found any entries in the Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directories
telling me exactly when he was based at that studio, but the style of cabinet
print at the top of this page looks to me to be typical of the 1890s.
Cabinet prints had been replaced by other formats of photograph by the time
that JC Leslie opened his studio at 23 Alderbank Terrace in 1907.

Thank you
to Bill Kennedy with a reply to his own question. Bill wrote: |

"A few days ago, on closer examination of my cabinet
print, I discovered that the 'J' could also be a 'T'. So, I did a Google
search and discovered a cabinet print by T Chalmers Leslie of Perth for sale on
this page of the
Prices4Antiques web site.
My ancestor who is the photograph's subject, lived
in Perth. Surely the two photographers were related. Let me know what you
think!"

The
description of the photograph being sold above is: |
Sale Description
Cabinet Card; Two Men Fishing with Rods:
Scotland, 1880-1900
"A cabinet card by T Chalmers Leslie of Perth,
Scotland shows two men posing on the river's edge holding fishing rods and
reels. This scarce subject matter also shows rods and reels appear to be
for fresh water angling or fly fishing."

Hi Bill:
The photographers may well have been related, but The plot thickens. I
have a booklet 'Photographers in Central Scotland to 1914' (by D Richard
Torrance). For Perthshire, it does not list:
- John Chalmers Leslie or
- T Chalmers Leslie
But it does list:
- James C Leslie
with studios at:
- 1899-1906: 14 South William Street, Perth
- 1900-1905: 18 South Methven Street, Perth.
