Entrance to No. 185

These buildings , a short distance below New Street on the northern side of the Royal Mile are five storeys high.  they were erected by the Incorporation of Cordiners (shoe makers) in 1677, but the front has since been almost entirely rebuilt.

The door here is the entrance to No 185.

In the window is a poster for SOOT (Save Our Old Town), a campaign that opposes the proposed Caltongate development for Waverley Valley that includes demolishing some 1930 tenements in the Royal Mile between Bible Land and New Street.

Above the door is a pedimented cartouche with cherubs' heads, a crown, a shoemaker's knife and an open book with the words:

BEhold how good a thing it is
and how becoming well
Together such as brethren are
in unity to dwell
IT IS AN HONOUR FOR MEN TO CEASE FROM STRIFE
