Fettes College
The Yeo Memorial Pavilion |
The View
I don't have any information about the Yeo Memorial
Pavilion, but it appears to be Fettes' Cricket Pavilion. There is a
large roller in the picture and a smaller one behind what looks like a
small scoring hut. |
The
Sender
This postcard has not been posted,
and the publisher is not named.
However, it appears to be part of
a large series of cards, judging by the high number that it bears -
No 340157
|
The
Date
Thank you to George Preston for
providing the additional comments from Alexia A Lindsay:
"This
photograph was certainly taken
after May 1906 and before 1928. I think it is 1906-10 as latterly it was
merely referred to as
The Pavilion and not the Yeo Pavilion and the fence between the box and
the roller would confirm this." |

John Shapland Yeo
Thank you to Sheila M Yeo,
Newton Abbot, Devon for providing me with the history behind the name of
the Yeo Pavilion, and a link to this page on the
Yeo Society
web site, which gives further details and an old engraving of JS Yeo.
Sheila added:
"This
should help to date the photograph. John was obviously very well
thought of, like Mr Chips".
A
Tribute
to
John
Shapland Yeo
"John Shapland Yeo was born in 1860 at Stonehouse, Gloucestershire.
He was educated at Blundels School in Tiverton, Devon and then was
awarded a scholarship to St John's College, Cambridge.
When he left Cambridge University he became a teacher at Fettes
College, a very large public school in Edinburgh.
John died on the 24th November 1904 and was then living at
Carrington House, Fettes College
I have a copy of 'The Fettesian' dated March 1905, sent to me
by Jill Yeo of Dubbo. It speaks of the great affection all of his
pupils had for John. His pupils write of him being a hero with
an understanding heart, brave, honest and kind. What better tribute
could anyone have?"
