Background |
I began by photographing the
different types of work being carried out in Edinburgh.
I later extended this projects to include
other parts of Scotland, mainly Central Scotland, in order to
include some of the industries that did not operate in Edinburgh. |

The Falcon Foundry was one of three

I visited the area in the early-1990s.

Candle
Makers
At the Carberry Candle works, in the 1990s,
I saw some interesting machinery. There was a machine for
dipping candles, invented, invented by the owner's father or
grandfather.
Other machines purified oil, greased wicks,
cut wicks, tapered the candle ends and made night lights. |

Carnoustie Castings |
Iron
Foundry
Carnoustie Castings had a foundry at Carnoustie, beside the North
Sea, about ten miles to the east of Dundee. Carnoustie is well known
for its golf course.
When I visited Carnoustie Castings in 1995, one of the items that
they were casting was a pillar box. |

Iron
Foundry
Clyde
Shaw had a large foundry at Motherwell, producing some very large
castings, and ingots of metal that were sent to England for use by
the motor industry.
This was one of many heavy industries in the area, along with
Ravenscraig Steel Works, in the 1990s, but most are no longer
operating.
The Clyde Shaw foundry closed in 1923. |

It
was photos like this one, of workers in the A F Craig works at
Paisley taken during World War One, that encouraged me to
start my projects photographing people at work in Edinburgh
and Scotland during the 1990s. |

Cooperage
The NB Distillery is near Hearts' football ground at Gorgie,
Edinburgh.
In the early-1990s, the company had a
small cooperage yard beside the distillery, but their main site for
the cooperage and bonded warehouses was (and still is) at Muirhall, West Calder, West Lothian.

Clock
Makers and Repairs
James Ritchie & Son are based in
Edinburgh, where they sell and repair watches and small clocks.
The company made many of the public clocks around Edinburgh.
In 1991, I visited their works in Livingston, West Lothian, where
they repaired large public clocks. |
