I took the photograph above in Peebles around 1980. I returned to Peebles to look for it a couple of years later, but could not find it, so when I added the picture to the web site above, I wrote: "Removed: possibly around 1980" I was not surprised to find it gone, as most things that I photograph seem to vanish shortly after I take the photos. |

However, I was pleased to receive an e-mail from Robin Brown, Tranent, East Lothian in November 2006, telling me that the petrol pump could still be found at Peebles and that he had photographed it : "The pump in your picture; or a very good copy is still in the same spot, at the same garage in Peebles. One of my work mates used to fuel up at that very pump. He told me how it used to work. These days it has bird feeders hanging from it. It could also do with a lick of paint. I popped round at 7.30 this morning and took a picture of it. No doubt I'll take some more. The shot is in colour but I wanted to try it out in black & white.
