Recollections 1. Liz Bolas Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England |
I took the two photos above last weekend after receiving a message from Liz Bolas about 3 Danube Street. Liz wrote: |
Stockbridge 3 Danube Street "My mother grew up at 3 Danube Street. My grandmother brought 8 children up in that house, so you can imagine the 'get togethers' when they all returned as adults with their own families. Police Box "One of my uncles worked in the police box in Dean Terrace so I was familiar with its (tiny) interior." ©" Liz Bolas, Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England: December 1+2, 2012 |
Recollections 2. David Bain Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England |
Thank you to David Bain who replied: |
Danube Street "Danube Street's most notable resident must have been the infamous madam Dora Noyce. She always maintained that she and her ladies did the best trade of the year when the General Assembly was in town!" David Bain, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England: December 5, 2012 |
17 Danube Street Yes; Dora Noyce ran a "house of ill repute" at 17 Danube Street, well known to the visiting sailors, Police and others. Over a long period she was regularly taken to court and fined for her activities, but returned to Danube Street each time and continued her trade. Peter Stubbs, Edinburgh: December 5, 2012 |
Recollections 3. Recollections Removed Please see 'Note' below |
Note I added a 'Recollections 3' to this page in December 2012, but I've now removed it because it was added to this page in error. The message came from Tiggy Archdale (née Naff) who spoke about living at No.3. However, Tiggy lived at No.3 Moredun Crescent - not No.3 Danube Street, -so I've now added her recollections to this Moredun Crescent page. Peter Stubbs, Edinburgh: April 18, 2013 |
Recollections 4. John Blain Edinburgh |
Thank you to John Blain who wrote |
Which Address? "I wonder if Tiggy was remembering 3 Danube Street or some other address in Recollections 3 above. Tiggy talks about a field and allotments but there were no such areas in or around Danube Street." My mother was the last Blain to live at 3 Danube Street, leaving the property around 1990." John Blain, Edinburgh: December 9, 2012 |
Thanks John: I've now added passed on your comments to Tiggy. If I get a reply, I'll add it below. Peter Stubbs, Edinburgh: December 9, 2012 |
Recollections 5. Liz Bolas Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England |
Thank you to Liz Bolas for also writing, confirming the comments made above by her uncle, John Blain. Liz wrote: |
Which Address? "Somebody has posted that they lived at No.3 Danube Street, from 1954 until 1967. This is clearly not possible, as my Grandmother lived there at least from 1932 until 1990. They also mention fields and allotments, neither of which existed there." Liz Bolas, Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England: December 9, 2012 |
