Duke Street

Thank you to John Stewart for allowing me to reproduce this photograph of Angelo Lanny selling ice cream from his barrow in Duke Street, Leith.

Ice Cream Barrow

"I was in touch with Lucia Lanny, today.  She is Angelo Lanny's daughter, born 1927.  She told me that this photo of Angelo with his ice cream barrow was taken in  1922.

Angelo came to Scotland from the village of Casino, near Montecasino, Italy, with his wife Camela Romano from Ravello, a village near Casio.

Angelo first sold ice cream from his barrow, getting the ice cream from Fusaros who had a shop in Duke Street, Leith.  Mrs Fusaro is the lady beside the barrow."

Thank you to John Stewart for identifying the location of this photo as Duke Street Leith.  John tells me that:

-  he recognises the entrance in the background as being to the Congregational Church Hall, Duke Street

-  Mrs Fusaro lived in Duke Street.  In this photo she appears to have just stepped out of her house to the ice cream barrow.

Ice Cream Shop

"This photo of Angelo was taken two years later, when he opened his ice cream shop at 21 Henderson Street in 1924."
