The photos below were taken on one of the 'Rambling for Fitness' walks, part of City of Edinburgh Council's Adult Education Programme. This week the walk,
on October 10, 2014 was from Balerno along the Water of Leith to Slateford, but the walkers continued, after coffee, along the Union Canal to Fountainbridge

The walkway here is also part of National Cycle Route 75. A signpost near here gave distances of WEST: Juniper Green 3/4 mile, Balerno 4 miles, Kirknewton 8 miles. EAST: Colinton 1/2 mile. Leith 8 1/2 miles

Colinton Railway Tunnel

Much of the walkway from Balerno to Colinton to Slateford follows the course of the old railway line from Edinburgh (Princes St Station) to Balerno.
Passenger services on this line began on 1 Aug 1874 and were withdrawn on 1 Nov 1943. Freight services continued until 1967.

There is a long staircase (with cycle ramp) leading down from the towpath at the eastern end of the aqueduct to the Water of Leith close to the Water of Leith Visitors' Centre on Lanark Road.
