Fishwives The young lady in this photograph, dressed as a fishwife, is Janet (jenny) Finlay, later to become Mrs Rutherford. She was aged about 19 when this photograph was taken. The date that the photo was taken is not known. |

Update - April 2008 Thank you to Shona McMillan, who is currently carrying out a fishing project around Edinburgh, for telling me she believes that Janet Finlay in this photo comes from Stonehaven and that the photo might in fact have been taken in Stonehaven. George Hall "The Newhaven photo archive at the City of Edinburgh Museums has a number of photos very similar to this one. Shona McMillan, above, says that this photo may in fact have been taken at Stonehaven. Update - December 2008 "I've had a chance to talk to the donor of the photograph ''Preparing Bait'. The young lady in the photograph is definitely Janet Finlay of Newhaven. The photograph was donated by Janet's grand-daughter. Janet worked as a fishwife and was later to have six children. However, her grand-daughter does not know whether or not her grandmother travelled with the fish. Her work was not discussed in detail. Consequently, the donor cannot say for certain that the photo is Newhaven, but it may well be so." Denise Brace: December 29, 2008 |
