- Which school was this?
- Where was it?
- Is it still standing?"

I asked Frank Ferri if he recognised this photo.
In the past, Frank has come up with lots of information about Leith,
but this time he tells me that the photo has got him stumped.

Considering that it was still in use right up to 1947
**,
you'd think someone would remember.
It looks like the picture
was taken from a wide junction. Faintly, I see a church steeple to
the left, and is that tram lines running across front of building
Historically the only
other Leith school that I'm aware of was St John's on corner of
Grt Junction St and Cables Wynd, now TESCO mini store

You could try publishing

Date of the Photo
** In fact, the message that I got from
Susan Varga with this photo was that she believes that it would probably
have been taken some time between 1930 and 1947, so the school may not
have been in use right up to 1947.
I've now contacted Susan again, asking if she can tell me anything more
about this photo - in particular, why she believes that it was probably
taken some time between 1930 and 1947.
Unfortunately, I'm not able to follow up Frank Ferri's suggestion about
posting the question on the 'Spirit of Leithers' facebook page because I'm
not currently using Facebook. (I used it for a while, but found that
it was taking up too much of my time!)

Tram Cables
"There
is faint evidence of overhead cables, supporting the tramline
theory. But why only a single track? Might it have
been a terminus of sorts?"

Tram Cables
"This has got me stumped.
However, looking at the photo it is
clear to see two tram cables in evidence. Each track
utilised one single cable and the fact there are two visible
suggests it is a double track not a single.
Looking at the causeway setts
also suggests there may be two lines in the roadway.
There is indeed a church spire visible
over the roof at the left side of the building."

Leith Boarding School
"Yes
- This is the building that stood on the site of the Leith Academy
that was built in the early-1930s. It was described in the late
1800s as John Watts Hospital for aged poor.
The John Watt Hospital was opened
in 1862. It was opened in the interests of welfare of men and women
in destitute circumstances. It stood at the SW corner of the Leith
Links."

"There's a reference to 'board school'
on
this page of the Edinphoto web site.
You also mention that "The other
school near the south-west corner of Leith Links, marked 'Board
School' on this map became Leith Academy Secondary School."
On the NLS website, there's a more
detailed map
here. I think this shows a good match
for the building, fence and gates in the photo.
So the answers to the question is that
the building in the photo above was at the SW corner of Leith
LInks, and that it was replaced by Leith Academy in 1931."
