Where is it?

This is one of a large collection of photos taken by Robert Blomfield  in Edinburgh between 1956 and 1967.  Robert's brother, John is in the process of scanning and cataloguing the photos.

He'd like to discover where this photo was taken.  If you recognise the location, please email me, then I'll pass on the news to John.

Thank you

Is it Easter Road?

Photograph taken in Edinburgh, 1960 - Where is it?

Might this photo have been taken at the southern end of Easter Road, beside Royal Terrace Gardens.  I'll  check next time I'm in the area.

Peter Stubbs, Edinburgh:  March 16, 2013

Update

There's now no need for me to check.  Alan Wilson has identified the correct location in his 'Reply 3' below.

"This lane is possibly Drummond Street, leading to Pleasance."

Terry McGuire, Coventry, Warwickshire, England:  March 16, 2013

There is certainly a high wall at the eastern end of Drummond Street, as this photo taken in 1975 shows.  The wall is part of one of the old Edinburgh City Walls, the Flodden Wall.

Thank you to Alan Wilson for sending a quick reply, and reaching a different conclusion from the two suggestions above.  Alan has supported Photo 8a below, a view from Google Maps.

"The location of this photo looks very much like North West Circus Place to me.

The second shot below from Google maps shows where I think it might be."

North West Circus Place, Stockbridge, Edinburgh - 2012

Google Earth web site, with acknowledgement to Alan Wilson, Trinity, Edinburgh for providing a copy of
the photo, which I have converted to monochrome for better comparison with the 1965 photo.

Alan Wilson, Trinity, Edinburgh:  March 16, 2013

Agreed

Thank you Alan.  The evidence you have provided certainly satisfies me, including the style of stonework in the wall, with 10 rows of stone up to the level of the lintel above the gate, then a further 19 rows of stones, in both photos.

Even the tree on the right in the Google image looks like a good match for the tree in the earlier image, considering that the two photos were taken almost fifty years apart.

North West Circus Place

Photograph taken in Edinburgh, 1960 - Where is it?

I visited North West Circus Place on the morning of 18 March and took Photo 8b below from about the same position as for Photo 8.  In fact, it was from about a couple of yards away, but the pavement slabs and the hole in the wall at the top of the old drainpipe can be matched in both my photo and the Google Streetview photo 8a above.)

The weather was cold  - about 0oC with wind and rain.  (There appear to be raindrops on the lens in both my photo and the  I may return later when the weather is better, and try to get a better match for Photo 8.  If I wait for a while I may even find be able to include a pram in the photo!

"I'm sure this photo is of Abbey Mount,
just over from the Tech School."

Where is it?

Stockbridge

Thanks for your comments, Douglas.   However we seem to have just about come 'full circle' with this one.  When I first saw this picture I thought it might be Abbeyhill, near the Tech School.

See 'Reply 1' above.

However, it soon became clear, with a lot of evidence to support it, that the photo was in fact taken at North West Circus Place, Stockbridge.

See Replies 3, 4, 5 above.
