Portobello 1947?

Where is it?
This looks like a busy scene, but where is it? The three
company names on the buildings in the background may help to
identify this location. They are:
- John Skinner
- Watsons
- John Adam & Sons (?)
- with a restaurant beneath.
There also appears to be a post office
in the foreground on the tight.
I've looked in old editions of the
Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directories and found companies with
these names, but not all at the same location. Here's what I
found:

I don't recognise the
location. Perhaps the photo was not taken in Edinburgh.
If you can suggest where this photo might have been taken,
please email me.
Thank you.

Stirling?
Hi Harry: Yes, the family may well have been
visiting Stirling. It certainly looks like a fairly busy location
somewhere, and I don't recognise the scene as being Edinburgh.
Perhaps others with a better knowledge of Stirling will comment.

I asked Harry
if he could tell me a little more about why he believed that this photo
had been taken in Stirling.
He replied: |
Stirling
"The scene seemed vaguely familiar to me.
I've
now looked on Google Maps at Maxwell Place, Stirling. The left hand
side going downhill seems to match the architecture in
the photo. The restaurant seems to be O'Neill's, nowadays."

"It's fantastic getting such
a quick reply. Yes, Stirling is definitely possible as my husband's
mother came from Sauchie which isn't far from Stirling.
Thank you, Harry for providing this
information. The mystery is solved at last."

Thank you to
Sheila Dickson for writing to confirm that the photo at the top of this
page was taken in Stirling, and for also providing a Google Streetview
image of the same location below.
Please see below. I've reproduced the Google
Streetview image in colour, and have also converted it to sepia to match
the early photo. |

"This photo of the 2 ladies
holding the little boy's hand would have been taken just outside the Post
Office at Murray Place, Stirling.
Check out the windows in the
background against those on the Google Earth

NOTE
I usually restrict the EdinPhoto web site to matters
relating to Edinburgh. However, this photo was added to the site in the belief that
it might have been taken in Edinburgh, so I've left it on the site, even
though it turns out to be Stirling.

My husband was born 1945 and looks approx
