In the background in this photo are buildings in  Greenside Place at the top of Leith Walk opened in 2002.

-  The Playhouse Theatre, the stone building on the left

- The Omni Centre, the glass-fronted building on the right,  has a 12-screen cinema, hotel and health centre.

Sculptures

In the foreground is one of three sculptures in front of the Cathedral, all by Eduardo Paolozzi, The Manuscript of Monte Casino.

His other two large sculptures here are:

-  an outstretched hand

-  a firmly planted foot.

Eduardo Paolozzi

The sculptor, Eduardo Paolozzi was born in Leith to Italian parents in 1924.  He attended the Edinburgh College of Art in 1943 but was called up for service in the army the following year.  He later attended London's Slade School, then travelled to Paris.

His studio has been recreated in the Dean Gallery, Edinburgh.

He was awarded an Honorary Degree by Edinburgh University in February 2005.  He died in April 2005, aged 81.
