The 'Magic Square' beside the wise virgins above reads the same
whether it is read:
- top to bottom
- bottom to top
- left to right or
- right to left.
There is some doubt as
to how the Latin 'ROTAS OPERA TENET AREPO SATOR' should be
translated into English.
Perhaps the correct
translation is: "The sower Arepo holds the wheels with
effort" or perhaps it should be "The sower Arepo leads with
his hand the plough". |
However, it is thought
that this may well have been some form of code used by early
Christians. The letters of the square can be rearranged in the
form of a cross to make the first two words of the Lord's
Prayer, together with 'A' and 'O' representing the alpha and omega,
the first and last letters of the alphabet'
