The Mound
Thank you to Ian Scott, Hazelmere, Buckinghamshire, England (a fire
engine enthusiast) for sending me this photograph of a South Pole sno-cat
for the Antarctica Fuchs Expedition, on display at the Mound, Edinburgh. |
1957-58 Antarctic Expedition
This sno-cat was presumably for the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic
Expedition, led by Vivian Ernest Fuchs in 1957-58, the first overland
crossing of the Antarctic.
The 2,158 mile, 99-day journey from Shackleton Base to Scott Base was
completed on March 2, 1958. Fuchs was knighted for his team's
achievement.
