The book Modern Athens describes the Canongate, shown in the engraving above:

"The houses represented in the engraving are chiefly remarkable for their irregular appearance;  but their lofty stories and diversified outlines contrast strongly with the new designs and long unbroken fronts of the modern streets of Edinburgh."  [This was written in 1829]
