Calton Hill  -  The New Observatory & Playfair's Monument

Calton Hill is situated about half a mile east of the East End of Princes Street.  It affords impressive views along Princes Street, to Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town, and across the Firth of Forth.

On the hill are two observatories (one shown here, which still has a working telescope), the Playfair Monument (shown here), the National Monument (never completed), the Nelson Monument and an old canon.

At the foot of the steps leading down from the hill towards Princes Street, behind a high wall is Rock House, the studio from which the early photographers, Hill and Adamson, produced their calotypes.
