The Royal Institution  -  Princes Street

The Royal Institution was built to a design by Playfair.  Construction began in 1825.  It was built for the joint accommodation of:

-  The Royal Society

-  The Society of Antiquities

-  The Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Scotland.

It was the first of two galleries to be built at the foot of The Mound.  This is the gallery facing directly on to Princes Street at its junction with Hanover Street.

The Scottish National Gallery was built later, in the 1850s, immediately to the south of the Royal Institution.
