Edinburgh Castle

This attractive little engraving appeared in Views of Edinburgh & Its Vicinity, published by Banks & Co, probably in the 1860s.  My edition has a message in ink written on the frontispiece and dated April 11 1869.  This booklet has a soft cover, titled Views in the Edinburgh District.

In this view, the Edinburgh to Glasgow railway can be seen passing through Princes Street Gardens and beneath the National Gallery of Scotland.  The buildings in this view are:

TOP CENTRE:  Edinburgh Castle on Castle Rock.

TOP RIGHT:  St Cuthbert's Church, beside West Princes Street Gardens.

LEFT:  Free Church of Scotland College, Mound Place.

CENTRE:  National Gallery of Scotland, The Mound.

RIGHT:  The Royal Scottish Institution, The Mound.

East Princes Street Gardens are in the foreground
