Leith 1st Scout Troop

I met Dave McKinlay, New Zealand, in Edinburgh in July 2012, during his cycling tour of Britain.

Thank you to David  for allowing me to reproduce the photo above of:

LEFT:  His grandfather, William Tyrell, 1st Leith Scoutmaster, dressed in scout uniform.

RIGHT: Mr Alerdyce, Assistant Scout Leader, dressed in military uniform. Can anybody tell me which Regiment this is likely to be?

William Tyrell

Dave tells me that:

-  The photo above was taken in 1915

His grandfather, William Tyrell, lived in Leith.  His last known address is 45 Sandport Street.

-  His grandfather was exempt from call-up for World War I because of his occupation.  He was a hammerman, riveting ships in Leith Docks.  Here is a copy of his Permit to Enter Leith Docks, dated 1915.  It appears to have been well used.

-  When he was Scoutmaster of 1st Leith Scouts, William Tyrrell received these two handwritten letter from Baden Powel.  Please click on the thumbnail images above to enlarge them.
