The Photos
"These photos all come from the family collection of the grandson*
of
the young guy standing in the middle of
this picture of the station staff at Dalry Road
Station. They were given to
Robert Pelosi several years ago,
then passed on to me.

* I think
his father was eventually in charge of Dalry Shed.

Railway Locos
"We're not sure
where these photos of the railway locos were
taken, but we think it was somewhere
in the Slateford area of Edinburgh, near or in a brewery or maltings.
I was thinking that the locos might
be shunting either the Caledonian Distillery or Lorimer & Clark's
brewery at Gorgie/ Slateford or perhaps both."

Dalry Road Station
"This photo is almost
certainly of Dalry Road Station on the
Caledonian Railway. (The LMS did have a Dalry
Station, but it was in Ayrshire.)
Dalry Road Station in
Edinburgh was the first stop out of Princes Street Station (the
‘Caley Station’) heading for Leith or Barnton. It
can be seen near the lower-right corner of this 1925 map:

Island Platform
The station had an
island platform, and was located where the curve of Western Approach Road
now is, just south of Dalry Road. In modern terms, just beside LIDL!
Here is another photo of
the station, taken from the EdinPhoto web site"

and here are three more photos of the station
that I found on the
Railscot
web site.

Western Approach Road
The Western Approach Road was largely built on
the alignment of the former railway, and the Dalry Road bridge is in the
location of a previous railway bridge.
There were accesses to the station both from
Dalry Road and from the Telfer Subway – you can still see where the
entrance from the subway has been built up.
I lived at Cathcart Place in the early 1970s,
when the Western Approach Road was being planned and built, and at that
stage the remains of the station were still there, but not including the
roof. |
