Bar Staff
"This photo is of the bar staff at
Rutherford’s, probably around 1960. Bob Turnbull (the Licensee) is on the
extreme left (in the suit), I am next to him – with the beard and pint!
The chap on the right, drinking the pint, is Doug Brown, but my memory
fails to identify the other two, unfortunately. Maybe some visitors to
your site will recognise them"

Question
Do you recognise the two
un-named bar staff in the photograph above? If so,
please email me to let me know, then I'll pass on the details to Neil

"I loved Neil's photo of Rutherford’s. That
photo takes me back.
Bob the owner looked younger then (ha ha ha ha), but I
can’t remember the staff who were featured in the photo with Bob. I
was wee at the time.
Bob
was a great friend of my uncle Tommy (Cokie), well known in Edinburgh’s
Southside. When Cokie died in 1975 Bob organised all the coaches, and after
a funeral wake and all the booze was free to friends and family.
Bob missed Cokie a lot, and I too miss Cokie and
Bob.
I would sell my latest toy, my Sony HD top of the
range TV, just to be able to go back in time, to walk in on Bob and say
“Goodness this place needs decorating” (ha ha ha ha) and Bob would have me
paying for the paint and labour (ha ha ha).

I asked Neil who had taken the
photograph of the bar staff at Rutherford's.
Neil replied:

The Photo
"I took the photo! I had a Pentax
S1a in those days, and simply put it on a chair in the bar, set the
self-timer, and – well you know the rest!"
1960 and 2007
"Incidentally, if you compare my
photo of the bar area, with the colour one taken in 2007, you will see that
the bar fittings and surrounds have hardly changed in over 40 years!!!"

"The young man 3rd from the left at the back
of this photo is my dad, John Lee. He worked at Rutherford's on and
off for years. He also worked in Stewart's Bar and Captain's Bar.
©
The Lee family all grew up and stayed at No 17
Drummond Street for years. Sadly, my dad is no longer with us.
He died in Dec 1992, aged 61."

"My Great Uncle Roger Paton (1891–1944) is in
this photo, I think he is likely to be the one on the far left.
Unfortunately there are no details on the original. My guess is that it
was probably taken between 1920 to 1940."
