Trams,
Cars and Fountain
This scene looks along Princes street to the east towards Calton Hill
from the the West End. The photo appears to have been taken from
the Rutland Hotel.
A long line of trams and cars, heading west, waits at the policeman
on points duty at the foot of Lothian Road. Thank you to Barbara
Hiddleston for telling me:
"In this photo, used as a
tramway island, is the Sinclair Fountain, erected in 1859 by Catherine
Sinclair for the use of the horses that pulled the cabs, the working men
and dogs.
Its fate was decided at a Tramway
Sub-committee Meeting, held around 17th December, 1925. The fountain
was removed in early 1926."
