Stereoscopic Cards

Background

Stereoscopic cards were popular from around the 1850s until early in the 20th century.  They consisted of two photographs, each about 3 ins square, mounted on board about 7 ins x 3.5 ins.  They were viewed through a stereoscope to give a 3D image.

Edinburgh frequently featured on stereo cards, produced by:

- publishers in the USA and elsewhere

- several of Edinburgh's own photographers.
