High School Yards

The District

High School Yards is a short street that runs parallel to the Cowgate, on higher ground immediately to the south of the Cowgate.  It was at the SE corner of the Old Town of Edinburgh, just within the city walls, to the west of the Pleasance.

The Housing

These houses looked much the same about thirty years earlier.  Here is a photo of them taken by Dave Henniker.  Dave believes that this photo would have been taken in or shortly after 1975 when he bought his Yashica TL Electro SLR camera

The houses in High School Yards remind me of some of the balcony houses in that used to be in nearby Dumbiedykes, now demolished:

   Dumbiedykes Road  -  no traffic, just a pram. ©

The High School Yard houses are quite deep, extending quite a long way back from the street,  as can be seen from this photo:
